About Kurtis

Born and raised in small-town Indiana, Kurtis has a diverse background and has lived a life of public-service outside of politics. As a father, small business owner, CASA, and first-responder, Kurtis will represent our community, not corporate interests.

After graduating  High School in Yorktown, Indiana, Kurtis entered public service by joining a summer firefighter recruit academy. After graduation, Kurtis continued his work in emergency services, earning several state certifications and licensure in Fire / EMS including graduating from Paramedic School.

Kurtis went on to work on the streets of Indianapolis & Bloomington and spent time in busy emergency departments, witnessing first-hand the state of our healthcare system.

Working nights, 24 hour shifts, being witness to trauma and the darkness of the world, Kurtis can directly relate to the struggles and unique challenges first responders and their families face.

Kurtis and his wife Kristin own Switchyard Brewing Company in downtown Bloomington. With a mission of being a catalyst for positive change within their community, Switchyard employees 45 and has grown to distributing beer across Indiana. Started in their two-car garage, Kurtis would home-brew beer on his days off from the ambulance and share it with friends and family. After five years of bootstrapping, Switchyard opened its doors in May of 2017.

Kurtis spends time volunteering in our community as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) in Monroe County and as a bugler for the American Legion Honor Guard. Previously, Kurtis and his wife Kristin worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central Indiana helping with fundraising, community events through Kristin’s work as a Big.

Kurtis spends his time mentoring other small business owners, networking with local groups and various Chambers of Commerce, and participating in community events. Kurtis has a strong belief that it is our responsibility, as citizens, to give back to the community that we live and he is excited to bring this same concept to the Statehouse for Indiana’s 46th House District.

Kurtis will be the leader that you can call for help, talk to in a coffee shop or meet up for a beer to discuss the issues that most directly affect our community and your family.
